Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII)

Non-Intrusive Inspection is any inspection technique that assesses the condition of a pipe, vessel, or piece of equipment without physically opening it up, removing insulation entirely, or taking it out of service - for example, external ultrasonic scanning, pulsed eddy current, or certain thermographic methods performed from outside a pipe or insulation jacket. It sits in contrast to internal visual inspection, which requires entry, isolation, or full insulation removal to directly view the surface. NII is attractive because it avoids the cost and downtime of intrusive access, but it typically trades off some precision against direct visual or internal examination, which is why it is usually paired with risk-based targeting rather than used as a blanket substitute for direct inspection everywhere.
